Fire at Area Landfill

Investigators continue to search for answers in a mysterious underground fire that`s been burning for two days. Representatives from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the EPA continue to look for answers in a fire burning at the Newton-McDonald County Sanitary Landfill. The landfill is located just a few miles from Crowder College in Neosho. An operator first noticed smoke coming out of the ground Wednesday, and today workers are probing the ground to look for hot spots. Although officials do not fear any danger to the public, they are still working as quickly as possible to get the situation under control. Beth Marsala, with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, said, "It showed two pretty good size hot spots right where we thought they were. We aren`t sure if they`re connected or not. That`s what we`re looking for right now. We`ve got a Geo Probe out there & it`s got a temperature sensor on it."" Workers are taking every precaution as they conduct investigations.
