Dangerous Tracks

Updated: April 25, 2007
The safety of one four state park is being questioned by the parents of some children who play there. Northern Arkansas Railways run east to west through Ewert Park, and the tracks are only about 40 feet from the playground equipment. With no fence or barrier to shield children from the tracks, parents are demanding the city take action. Parent, Chip McClellan says, "There needs to be some way where the kids can`t get to it." Billy Miner, father of two, adds, "It`s the city of Joplin`s fault." Parks and Recreation Director, Jerry Calvin says landscaping was strategically planted to grow as a barrier from the tracks. Railroad spokesperson, William Hudran says, "It`s the parent`s responsibility to teach their children not to get on the railway. Railroad representatives also say the carts that travel the tracks do not exceed 10 miles per hour. Reported By: Sheradee Scott
