Joplin, MO- 64 ounces a day - it's how much water you need to function at your best.  Freeman Dietitian Heather Boline says, "Water is one of the essential nutrients and we need at least eight cups a day.  The reason, our body is made up of mostly water, 60 - 70% of the body is water."

Boline says that can affect the body in several ways.  "It's responsible for every metabolic function in our body.  Such as digestion, absorption, and ridding of waste.  We require water for our mental and physical performance just trying to get enough water is going to help you maintain good hydration."

Boline adds it also keeps your skin healthy, maintains body temperature and helps with a general feeling of well being.  "Athletes who want to have that extra edge want to make sure they're well hydrated and even for us at our daily jobs want to make sure we're well hydrated so we can perform at our best function."

Besides thirst, other signs of dehydration include headache, fatigue and a drop in performance levels.
