Child Abuse Sentence

Updated: January 7, 2009
A four state woman charged with child abuse is now telling her side of the story. "I decided since my boyfriend wasn`t drinking anymore I would get drunk since someone was there to watch the kids." 22 year old Charlee Heitz admits to being drunk the night her children were bit by rats, but says that`s not a reason to go to jail. She left the children unattended in an upstairs room claiming it was easier to heat. "It would have happened whether I was sober or drunk, spending the night in the house. I don`t see why they are blaming it on me just becuase i was drunk,"said Heitz. Heitz says her boyfriend heard the babies crying and ran up the stairs where he saw rats biting the babies. "They were covered from head to toe in blood and my two year old was sitting there saying rats mommy, rats they did it." Rats also attacked the two year old while he was sleeping downstairs. Evidence of the attack still exists in the attic room where the twins were left strapped in car seats. The babies bloody clothes and diapers, but there`s no evidence of the rats. Except a cage set by officials in order to capture any remaining rodents. But heitz says she loves her children and had no intent to harm them. "It was stupid, it was stupidity, I`ll admit it, it was the stupidest thing I`ve ever doen in my life. If I could take it back I would." Heitz was in court today for a custody hearing, results of that hearing are not being released. Reported By: Jennifer Grannan
