DFS Gone Broke

The Missouri budget shortfall is putting a strain on people in the area. More than 300 people in the Jasper County area rely on the general relief check they get in the mail. In order to be eligible for general relief, a person`s income must be less that 181-dollars a month. Before the budget cuts those who qualified were receiving eighty dollars a month. Now beginning February first those people will now receive nine dollars a month. Officials say it`s sad the state had to cut into the general relief fund, but they`re doing what they can to help. "It`s hard for us too when people come to us and we really feel for them, but there`s not really a whole lot we can do about it other than look at their individual situationas and see if we can refer them somewhere else,"said Sharon Denny,DFS Coordinator. DFS is trying to help people through food stamps, energy assistance, vocational rehabilitation and other similar programs. Reported By:Jennifer Grannan
