A Picher man is in jail for allegedly stealing a highway patrol cruiser and pointing a rifle at a trooper. Police say Freddy Smith was stopped for speeding just south of Miami on Sunday. Officers say while the trooper interviewed a passenger in Smith`s car, Smith slid behind the wheel of the trooper`s vehicle, turned on the emergency lights and sirens and drove away. Trooper Scott Hampton followed in a borrowed pickup truck. During the chase Police say Smith pointed Hampton`s assault rifle at the trooper. When Hampton fired back, officers say Smith dropped the rifle, but still resisted arrest until he was sprayed with pepper spray. Smith remains in the Ottawa County Jail on more than 200-thousand dollars. Reported By: Sarah Lonnevik
