Red Cross Hoax

Updated: January 7, 2009
A disturbing telephone hoax has left friends and family of service members devastated for no reason at all. Phone calls have been made by someone claiming to be from the Red Cross with critical information about deployed loved ones, which has turned out to be untrue. Reports indicate the caller tells the family their loved one has been listed as missing in action, killed in action, or being held prisoner of war. But kobi watford of the local red cross says there is a way you can tell if such a call is valid. "Anyone receiving such a phone call needs to know that this would not be legitimate. TAhey would not receive a phone call from the red cross in this way and anyone being notified of this type of situation would be contacted then the military crisis team and most often that would be in person and not over the phone,"said Watford. Watford also says if you receive this type of phone call, you should immediately contact your loved one`s military unit and your local chapter of the red cross for verification. So far no cases have been reported in the four-states. Reported By: Janae Menz
