Keeping Cool in the Four States

Updated: January 7, 2009
Temperatures are rising outside, and so are heat-related dangers. With temperatures hitting 90s, it`s important to keep cool. But many people can`t afford the luxery of air conditioning. That`s why it`s important to know where to go to cool off from the summer heat. It`s also important to know how to keep you home cool when temperatures rise to dangerous levels. That`s why the Area Agency on Aging is helping seniors by collecting fans and air conditioners. Less fortunate seniors age 60 years or older can stop by the agency for the free assistance. Last year, over 35 air conditioners were distributed to people in Barton Jasper, McDonald and Newton counties. "It`s so important for seniors to be in air conditioning because they are the most at risk. And heat is one of the leading causes of death in the summertime sometimes we don`t even think about that,"said Bev Scroggins, Area Agency on Aging. If you would like to donate a fan or air conditioner you may do so at the Joplin Salvation Army. But if you`re away from home, and need some cooling off,the Salvation Army is also available. Volunteers have been filling coolers with ice water so the less fortunate can drop by to cool down in the lobby and stay till the temperatures go down. It`s all part of the Salvation Army`s heat relief program which began today. The program helps an average of 20 people each day who need to cool down. Reported By:Brad Douglas
