Commissioners in one four state county are asking for voters` help to increase public safety. A special election ballot will ask Vernon County residents to vote yes or no on August fifth to raise county sales taxes one half cent. The revenue would be used to build a new public safety center which would include a new jail and would also fund an enhanced 911 service.
Some county officials agree that the current facility compromises public safety. "In comparing our current facilities with today`s jails or facilities, it would meet hardly any of what would be considered federal guidelines for a jail facility,"said Charlie Johnson, Vernon County Commissioner. It is estimated that the proposed sales tax would generate 840 thousand dollars per year for fifteen years. If the vote passes, the new public safety center will be built in Nevada at the intersection of business highway 71 and US highway 54.
