A four state teacher charged with misdemeanor assault of a nine-year old student has resigned. The Carthage Board of Education has accepted the resignation of Mary Bell, a 4th grade teacher at Columbian Elementary. Police say the incident originated as a disciplinary action. Investigators say two fourth grade students were involved in a pushing match. Bell became involved and allegedly pushed one boy back and put her hands on the throat of the other student involved. Earlier this summer, assault charges against Bell were deferred of prosecution. Reported by Jim Jackson
