Gas Drive Offs

Updated: January 7, 2009
Filling up your gas tank and not paying is on the rise in Joplin. According to the Joplin Police Deparmtnet, gas drive offs are up 13 percent from last year. Workers at the 13th Street Express Stop says they have had a few in the last few weeks. It`s up to clerks to catch the license plate number and a description of the suspect. "It`s difficult to get a description of the vehicle. The license plate number that kind of stuff. So it`s hard to followup on but when we do get a report what the license number is and a description of the drive, our follow that up and track those people down,"said Sgt. Geoff Jones, Joplin Police Department. The penalty for stealing gas is up to a one-thousand dollars fine, one year in jail and offenders could also have their license suspended.
