breaking news
Good news for area drivers as construction on the area`s busiest roadway finally comes to a red light. Motorists are now able to drive in and out of Joplin with fewer construction delays. The final reconstructed section of I-44 was opened today. After an eight month construction project all lanes of interstate-44 have finally been opened to drivers. Workers with the Missouri Department of Transportation have repaved six inches of black top on eight and a half miles of I-44. They also rebuilt 12 bridges along the highway. According to modot officials, the last time this section of roadway was totally re-paved was 40 years ago. This is by far the busiest section of highway in this area, with more than 40-thousand cars and trucks traveling on the roadway daily. Contractors say it normally takes at least a year and a half to resurface an average of eight and a half miles of roadway. This same project was completed in just eight months. The total cost of the project for Missouri taxpayers is 11-point-seven million dollars.
