Preparing For the Snow

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
As mother nature works to bring the Christmas spirit to the area, road crews work to prepare for the storm. Public Works employees have been getting their trucks ready for the impending snow. Before the first flake hits the ground, workers test their equipment to make sure it`s ready for the storm. One of the first things the workers do to prepare is to install snow plows on the front of the vehicles. The substance that is spread on the roads is a cinder, salt and calcium mix. And the salt is stored inside a large dome. The workers don`t lay any salt on the roadways until the snow actually starts to fall. Public Works employees say they have a speicific route they drive as soon as the first flake falls. During winter weather public works takes over the clearing of city roads. State roads are covered by MODOT who also has crews salting the roadways as soon as the snow begins. Reported By: Brad Douglas
