The driver of the taxi, stolen by a 40-year-old man who later died after crashing into a tree, speaks about the incident. According to the owner of "A-dependable taxi company", taxi driver Gilbert McHone, picked up Ricky Dennington of Joplin outside a bar on Main Street. Apparently, Dennington was drunk, and became beligerant. That`s when Gilbert decided to take him to the police station. Witnesses say Dennington was driving at a high rate of speed when he hit a tree and a utility pole near Stone`s Corner at the intersection of Main Street and Highway 1-71. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident caused a power outage to 200 residents in North Joplin. Crews from Empire District Electric restored power just after 9:30 last night.
