Updated: January 7, 2009
An early morning fire in the four-states claims the life of an elderly woman. The fire broke out just after 9:30 this morning at a three-story home just outside Alba, Missouri. 85-year old Jean Smith was inside her home when the fire began. Fire crews say Smith was using oxygen, and several tanks exploded once they came into contact with the flames. Fire crews from Carthage, Jasper, Oronogo and Carterville all responded to the blaze. Several firefighters on the scene said it`s one of the worst ones they`ve ever seen. Along with the elderly woman, two other people lived in the home. They were able to escape with no injuries. While there is no exact determination at to what may have started the blaze firefighters say Smith was a heavy smoker which may have been the source of the flames. Reported By: Brad Douglas
