Updated: January 7, 2009
The Missouri Department of Conservation has sub-leased 47 acres of Wildcat Park to the National Audubon Society. The Audubon Society will lease the acres for a period of 50 years. The lease consists of two back to back 25 year leases for a dollar a year. The park will receive 500 thousand dollars improvements, provided by the City of Joplin. Also a nature center building will be constructed at the park. "We identified early in our planning process that here wsa not a facility here in this area. we`re not just talking about Joplin or Southwest Missouri. We`re talking the four state region. You have to go all the way to Springfield to see a nature center or a zoo or Kansas City or Tulsa. This is a great opportunity for this community and this area to have a nature resource like this in our backyard,"said Tony Robyn,Audubon Nature Center. The Missouri Department of Conservation will provide a two-million dollar matching grant which will help with the construction of the new nature center. Reported By: Brad Douglas
