Updated: January 7, 2009
It was 163 years ago today Jasper County was officially founded. Residents gathered inside the carthage courthouse today to eat birthday cake in honor of the county`s big day. A proclamation was also presented from the Missouri House of Representatives in celebration of the day. But the birthday wasn`t the only thing worth celebrating. At the party, Commissioner Jim Honey announced beginning in February the Courthouse will begin installation of new lighting which will closely resemble the original design from the 1800s. "Jasper County is kind of a center from which greatness has developed and reached out to touch all of the world. It is a most unique environment,"said Martin VanGilder,Jasper County Historian. VanGilder is the author of Jasper County, the first two hundred years. Reported By: Brad Douglas
