The Joplin R-8 School District recently purchased property for expansion. The Joplin R-8 school district recently purchased four properties adjacent to the Stapleton Elementary campus. Joplin Superintendent Dr. Jim Simpson says the south part of the district has been growing and the purchase of the property allows the district to expand. Simpson says the school board is also proposing a plan that could shut down some area schools, replacing them with newer buildings.
The plan calls for the closing of some of the older buildings in the district including possibly Emerson and West Central. Simpson says most of the plans call for changes in elementary and junior high schools, with the possibility of combining joplin area junior high schools.
Dr. Simpson says this proposal is only in its beginning stages. He says he expects to hear much more throughout the oncoming months. Dr. Simpson says he expects the public to voice their opinion until something appears on the ballot in November.
