Health concerns at a Missouri factory may reach outside the Four-States. Last month, 17 workers from a Jasper Popcorn Factory filed suits for medical complications. The problems were apparently associated with breathing powdered butter flavoring. Eight workers from the plant have developed a rare lung disease. Six of the workers are awaiting lung transplants. Now investigators from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are concerned that other popcorn plants could be seeing the same medical problems. State health departments in Nebraska and Iowa have been alerted to the danger. One case has been reported in Nebraska and three cases have been reported in Michigan. The Jasper plant is scheduled to have more health screenings and air sample tests later this month.
