JOPLIN, MO---"The most common indication of head lice is itching at the scalp," says Freeman Urgent Care Medical Director Dr. Paula Hartzell.

Hartzell says it's not tough to confirm the problem.

"The adult head lice will be crawling on the hairs and the nits are the eggs of the lice those actually attach to the hair," she says

The treatment is simple - shampoo and a little laundry.

"If you know you've had some contact with someone who had lice, just a simple shampooing and doing landering of the bed sheets and any kind of clothing that you might have been wearing," Hartzell says.

If it's confirmed you have lice - you'll want to use a special shampoo like the over the counter product called nix.

"You basically put on for 10 minutes then wash out after that. It does require combing so that the nits or the eggs that are in your hair can be removed. Then you need to wash all the bed clothes in as hot a water as you can - but it's usual laundering for the clothing and linens," she says.
