JOPLIN, MO--

A southwest Missouri man is in jail after breaking into a Joplin home.

35-year old Craig Garrard of Carthage was arrested near 15th and Virginia last night.

Police say it started when he confronted his girlfriend.

She was inside this home, apparently leading him to kick in the front door.

Authorities say he started attacking his girlfriend, then also struck a female resident of the home when she tried to intervene.

Corporal Chuck Niess of the Joplin Police Department says, "At which point, one of them became concerned for their safety due to the nature of the assault. She utilized a knife and stabbed the suspect in the back. Relatively minor injury."

Garrard is charged with burglary, domestic assault and possession of a controlled substance.
