GIRARD, KS - The Heartland Rural Electric Cooperative (Heartland REC) is behind the program. It allows customers to receive one dollar for every unit of energy saved during peak hours; That's from from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00p.m. on select days during July and August.
A home's peak energy usage is determined by looking at the average amount of energy that a household consumes on a normal day. Then on peak days participants will be compensated based on how much energy they save compared to a normal day.
"Because members are paying more attention to energy efficiency and conservation they are able to reduce their electric bill," said Louie Weimer with Heartland REC. "they are able to earn a rebate by helping us reduce our demand, and then by helping us reduce our peak demand, they are helping us keep rates low in the future," Weimer added.
This is the first year "Peak Savers" will be available to all Heartland REC customers.
