PITTSBURG, KS - Athletes participated in over 20 different track and field events, beginning at 9 a.m lasting until 3 p.m. Parents and volunteers filled the venue encouraging the athletes. Over 63 teams from all over the region competed in the games that have been happening in Southeast Kansas for over a decade

"Our athletes can start at age 8 and they can participate at any age, explained Amber Hellwig, Regional Special Olympics Director. "Some of them have been doing it for 20 plus years, and even the new ones I think it's such a great joy for their parents to be able to see their child have a sense of accomplishment," she added.

Hellwig says events like these are a great way to build confidence and give these athletes a sense of independence.
