Cuts to Childcare Subsidies Dropped By Missouri Senate

"These parents need to have a provided day care with a safe environment for their child so they can go to work they have electric bills to pay,they have gas bills to pay," says Tabatha Bailey.

She has been operating Dinosaur Academy for 18 years. It focuses on providing affordable daycare for struggling parents. And, as their sign says, they accept state pay.

"Some of these parents bank on us being here to provide that care," says Bailey.

40 kids are enrolled in her daycare, most are there because of subsidized childcare funding.

"65 percent maybe 70 percent," says Bailey.

A big demand that the Missouri State Senate considered cutting from its 2013 budget.

That would mean more than 3,800 kids would no longer have state funding for daycare.And funding would be limited for another 23,000.

"If my kids where included in that it would mean that my husband who works a part time job would have to quit that job to stay with the kids and that means a lower income," says Lisa Gonzales.

Gonzales has three children. They all receive state funding to attend Dinosaur Academy. She said she was worried about the cut. But, with a new budget plan that restored subsidized childcare she will be more at ease.

"Cause they are in a safe place," says Gonzales.

Dropping the cut is not final yet. The house and senate committees will have to agree on each other's budgets before finalizing plans.

The final budgets are due to Governor Jay Nixon on May 11th and need his signatures before they're official.
