PITTSBURG, KS -- VanGorden started as a laborer in 1967, and has worked as the Parks and Rec Director, and the City Manager.  Former Pittsburg Mayor Jim Aubuchon says VanGorden will be missed around the office.  "He's really a walking history book for the city."  Aubuchon explains.  "He knows so much, and it's going to be really sad to have all of that walk out of the door."

John VanGorden says he's looking forward to a different kind of life after retirement.  "I'll play a little golf, try to stay as busy as I can."  He says.  "Kind of just really enjoy life.  That's what it's all about, I worked all my life now I want to enjoy it."

City officials also renamed the public utilities building after VanGorden in honor of his years of service.
