The governor announced today 2.8 million in state funding for Joplin schools.
With the money, school administrators will be able to add safe rooms at 16 sites.
The overall cost for the project will be 26.3 million.
The federal government will cover 75% of the cost and the approved bond issue will cover the remaining 4.2 million.
Governor Nixon says the investment will help ensure students' safety in the future.
"Even one year after the devastating tornado, this investment is another step in our commitment to make sure things keeps moving forward," Governor Jay Nixon says.
"This provides us with a safety net and a little bit of relief as we go forward," Joplin Superintendent Dr. CJ Huff says.
The remaining $527,000 in state funds will help pay for the demolition of 90 properties surrounding the Joplin High School campus.
