MIAMI, OK--  A bill passed in the Oklahoma Legislature could allow gun owners to carry handguns in public.

Oklahoma Senate Bill 1733 has people talking.

The measure would amend gun licensing to allow people with a conceal and carry permit to also carry their handgun in public as long as it's in a holster.

Some oklahoma residents oppose the bill saying it will only cause more problems.

"There's been known people getting in arguments and someone grabs it from then and someone gets shot," says Miami resident Larry Duncan.

But, others believe the new measure would help lower crime.

"I feel like it will be more security for people that are honest because criminals won't be wanting to rob people," says Commerce Resident Delcie Rhoades.

And some residents are on the fence.

"In certain situations, yeah it's a good idea but there's a lot of people that don't need to carry a gun for sure," says another Miami Resident.

The bill states that before gun owners can openly carry a firearm. they have to be at least 21 years old, pass a background check, and have a concealed weapon permit.

Plus, they're also required to attend a firearms training course.

"If you can pass a background check and you can go through training I do believe it will be a deterrent to all the idiots running around breaking into houses."

"It still puts too many guns, especially where they're in sight, you have a lot of people they might try to take it," sasy Duncan.

Both the Oklahoma Senate and House approved the bill. Now it is up to Governor Mary Fallin to sign it into law.

If signes, the bill take effect in November.
