JOPLIN, MO -- The start to an emotional tornado anniversary began for many people at Freeman Health System's 'Morning Has Broken' ceremony.

Tears rolled down the cheeks of many listening to the heroism displayed by Freeman health care providers and volunteers on May 22nd and the days that followed.

Freeman patient Malachi Murdock and his mother Susan Murdock praised the Freeman team who helped save Malachi's life after the storm.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon also spoke about Freeman employees ability to treat the more than seventeen-hundred wounded people in the first few days of the storm.

"This hospital was already full when the tornado hit," (D) Missouri Governor Jay Nixon says. "That didn't stop them from going the extra mile. Literally reaching in the rubble to save lives."

"I've been asked to be to be kind of the icon of survivors of Joplin," tornado survivor Malachi Murdock says. "That's really an honor for me that just a regular guy would be asked to do that."

Freeman President and CEO Paula Baker awarded Governor Nixon with the "Freeman Fellow Award."

Nixon is only one of six people in Freeman's 90-year history to receive the honor.
