JOPLIN, MO -- Joplin School Board President Randy Steele says board members are looking for the right person to help shape the future of joplin schools. "When you're a school board member you're devoted, and dedicated, to the children of your school district." Steele explains.

Steele says there is a lot of work to do in the district, and wants to make sure the candidate for the position has the time to help. Board member currently spend between 20 and 40 hours a week performing their duties.

Those interested can apply until June 13th, and school officials say they hope to have a decision made by the end of June. Steele says the right candidate will have already been involved with the school district. And want to get even more involved moving forward. Once approved by a vote of the current board members, the candidate will have to take an intensive 16 hour course offered by the state of Missouri to learn more about issues that many school districts face. "You learn about finances, parents, children." Steele explains. "Learn about different programs, grades, building a building, architects, a little bit of everything is taught in the class."

The appointment will last for one year, but Steele hopes the new board member will have plans to run again during the next election.

Joplin residents who are interested in joining the school board must send a letter by June 13th to:

Tiny Bridges
School Board Secretary
P.O. Box 128
Joplin, Mo 64802

The letter must include what their qualifications are, and the reason for wanting to be on the Joplin School Board.

You must be a Joplin resident, lived in Missouri for a minimum of one year, and be at least 24 years of age.
