JOPLIN - You'll want to beware of some online scams when you go to book your next vacation.

Joplin Police warn that some scam artists are posing as family or friends online. They say it's most likely a scam if anyone asks you to wire money online through Western Union.

Also, police say you should check references and do research before spending money with a hotel site. They say businesses that are well known are a safe bet.

Corporal Chuck Niess says a lot of people fall for cheap trips

"They think they're going to get something for nothing," he says. "So if something looks too good to be true go the other way."

Niess also says it's best to avoid Craigslist when booking a trip.
