JOPLIN, MO -- Joplin inches its way closer to earning a national honor.

The city is currently one of six finalists for the title of "Friendliest City" in the United States.

The contest is sponsored by Rand Mcnally and USAToday.

700 cities originally entered the contest.

Walla walla, Washington and College Station, Texas are also finalists.

A team will come to the Joplin in the next weeks to judge the friendliness for themselves.

"In the last year, of course, we've had an influx of visitors coming to the city for visiting and aid in our recovery and common theme is how friendly this city is and how welcoming citizens are, so i'm not surprised," says Martha Getz, Tourism Assistant at the Joplin Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

Contest directors will announce the winner July 16th.
