QUAPAW, OK -- A local EMS department receives top honors in Oklahoma.

Quapaw EMS received Service of the Year Award.

"The Oklahoma Native American EMS Association" recognized the department for a year of hard work.

That included the help they provided during the Joplin tornado and a rescue at the Spring River Bridge.

Quapaw eEMS competed against all tribal emergency services in Oklahoma for the award.

"Oklahoma being rich in Native American history and population, it was an honor for us to be named by our peers," says Quapaw EMS paramedic Chris Wilkens.

Quapaw EMS helped about 250 Joplin tornado victims and transferred hundreds to area hospitals for treatment.
