Nevada Makes A Bid to Improve Sidewalks for Wheelchair Accessibility

NEVADA, MO.--- The Nevada City Council unanimously approved a bid for $135,000 from Sprowl's Construction to begin making sidewalks more ADA accessible. It's part of a grant that the city received from MODOT for enhancement funds. The improvements would be made from Nevada High School to the Community Center and downtown square area. The Nevada City Manager says that area needs attention to make it more ADA accessible and pedestrian friendly. Currently portions of the sidewalk are less than 4 feet wide, which is not enough space for 2 individuals in wheelchairs to get through.
"We're going to impact more than 1,000 students and more than thousands of potential residents by creating this safe corridor and again with the traffic counts in access of 10,000 cars a day in this vicinity. It's important we get kids off the street and onto the sidewalks," states JD Kehrman, City Manager.
The city can enter into contract at the next council meeting. Kehrman expects the construction to begin in the fall.
