MIAMI, OK.--- "little town of Miami, Oklahoma. It's kind of hard to believe someone would do that here," states Ralph Smith, Maintenance Worker at Legacy Inn.
It seemed like a normal day for maintenance workers at the Legacy Inn in Miami on Thursday. They started their usual routine by taking out the trash.
"As I threw it in the dumpster, I saw a green duffel bag and it was quite new so I said well, I'd like to have this," states Smith.
When Ralph Smith opened the bag what he found inside caught his attention, glass bottles, fabric, and duct tape.
"I knew what it was. Someone was making molotov cocktails," says Smith.
That's the street name for fire bombs. Smith immediately called the Miami Police Department.
"We're very grateful that this particular individual was curious enough to look at what he saw appear to be suspicious and then call," states George Haralson, Miami Chief of Police.
Officers linked the duffel bag to this man, Gregory Weiler, who was staying at the hotel. He had made 52 fire bombs. An entry is his journal outlined a plan to bomb 48 churches in Miami, and 4 more in Ottawa County.
"I go to a church in Miami, I know a lot of people that go to church here. I'm glad the situation happened how it did and everyone was safe," states Smith.
Authorities says a threat longer exists for Ottawa County churches.
