LAMAR, MO.--- "Total surprise, total terrible incident," states Sheriff Mitchell Shaw.
Around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning officers got the call.
"Officers with the Lamar Police Department, deputies with the Barton County Sheriff's Department, along with medical personnel responded to a 911 call," states Mike Watson, Missouri Highway Patrol.
They arrived at this resdience at 91 Southwest 5th Lane Southwest of Lamar. Law enforcement says upon arrival they located Cheryl Thompson, 67, conscience outside the residence.
"She was victim of a gunshot wound and subsequently transported by helicopter to a Springfield hospital with life threatening injuries," states Watson.
Going inside the house, officers located Dana Ison, 33, who was unresponsive and a victim of a gunshot wound.
"Dana Ison was later pronounced dead at the scene by Barton County Coroner, Dr. C Tucker Joustra," states Watson.
An investigation led officers to the alleged shooter, Landon Ison, 32, a former Lamar police officer. He was found 5 miles Northwest of his home in a rural area near his car around 2:30 a.m.
"and was dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound," states Watson.
The shootings shocked the community.
"My reaction to this is that everybody in the community knew the family and they were hardworking, good people," Sheriff Mitchell Shaw.
Sheriff Mitchell Shaw says he was close with family.
"I requested the highway patrol's assistance because of the close personal relationship we had with the Ison family," states Shaw.
The law enforcement continues to investigate the crime scene. Deputies say the couple separated earlier this month, their 2 young boys were home at the time of the incident, but were not injured.
Dana Ison's coworkers were also shocked by the shootings. The AOK President, Kathy Jenkins released this statement today.
"Dana Thompson Ison was a beloved friend, coworker, daughter, sister and mother. She was an invaluable member of the AOK family as a social worker and school age program coordinator. She also led the mentoring program and offered counseling and assistance to anyone in need. She loved the children and they loved her. She was passionate about making a difference in their lives and she did. Words cannot express our sorrow at her passing." states Kathy Jenkins, President AOK Board of Directors
