BAXTER SPRINGS, KS.--- "It has a nostalgic factor to it," states Dennis Burke.
School Superintendent, Dennis Burke says the current Baxter Springs Middle School, which also served as the town high school is more than a structure, it's part of the town's heritage.
Everyone remembers it as their high school or their middle school," states Burke.
For that reason the school board is not following through with the initial plan of spending thousands to demolish the building.
"the one thing the board didn't want it to become was a safety hazard, an eyesore," states Burke
Right now, school officials plan to preserve it by selling the structure to one of two kansas city realtors.
"From that point on they would be in charge of renovating, getting the capitol, the investors and turning it into affordable senior housing," states Burke
The apartment complex would have 15 to 20 units. The school board formed a committee made up of neighbors, they will help brainstorm other options for the building, but one neighbor thinks a senior complex is a great idea.
"I just think it'd be a perfect use for it," states Charles Willitz.
Charles Willitz just moved in next door to the historic 1918 building, even he's grown attached.
"It's a beautiful building. I liked the building when i first saw it and I'd hate to see it go," states Willitz.
The auditorium and gymnasium would be transformed into community event centers. The school district would help maintain the two. They have about two years to make a plan. The new middle school is set to open in January of 2014.
