JOPLIN, MO.--- He had a near drowning November 11th 2010," says Scott Perkins, Thomas' Father.
It's a date the Perkins family will never forget. Nearly 2 years ago, a bath time accident left their youngest son, Thomas, in critical condition.
"He was eventually put on a heart lump bypass machine because his lungs were so damaged by the bleach in the water. And he spent 29 total days in the ICU, 8 days on the bypass machine," says Perkins.
After spending more than a month in the hospital, Thomas was finally ready to come home. Although his homecoming was a clear sign of progress, more challenges lay ahead.
"We took him to multiple doctors appointments every week and as much as two trips to Kansas City every month," says Perkins.
The recovery was an emotionally and physically taxing time on the family until help came from the Children's Miracle Network.
"CMN has provided us with quite a bit of his supplies, and they have also helped us with transportation to and from Kansas City," says Perkins.
CMN also helped set the Perkins family up with an emotional support system.
"Other families who have heard about our story through other sources, who also were CMN families and had similar stories too, gave us hope and reassurance," says Perkins.
Thomas will turn 3 years old this month and lightears ahead of where specialists predicted he would be at this stage in his recovery.
"At this point, to call his recovery anything shy of a miracle is impossible," says Perkins.
