JOPLIN, MO.--- When you talk to Donnie Bennett, you can just hear it in his voice how much he loves his pasta.
"As you can tell, I eat pasta several times a day," states Donnie Bennett.
He own's Caldone's Italian Restaurant in Joplin and he says "World Pasta Day" is now one of his favorite holiday's .
"Of course we should have the day off," states Bennett.
The celebration began in Rome, Italy back in 1995 and is a way to celebrate the pasta manufacturers around the world. It's an odd holiday, but Donnie says it's a lot more fun than say, Groundhog Day.
"There ought to be a world pasta day. Pasta is absolutely one of the best dishes on earth," says Bennett.
Pasta can be healthy too. Heather Boline is a Freeman dietitian in Joplin and she says there are some healthy noodle options.
Pasta can be healthy too. Heather Boline is a Freeman dietitian in Joplin and she says there are some healthy noodle options.
"Made from vegetable flour, pretty high protein, low carb. There's also gluten free," states Heather Boline.
The noodles may be healthy, but the sauce you choose is also important to stay healthy.
"Choose more red sauce and try to avoid a lot of the creamy white sauces," states Boline.
That love of pasta has carried onto the next generation. Donnie says pasta is his son's favorite food.
"Both my boys, that's what's so fun about having an Italian restaurant. They come in, spaghetti everywhere, red sauce everywhere. That's what makes it fun," states Bennett.
Donnie says making the pasta is half of the fun, and he has some advice on how you should celebrate this holiday.
"This would be a great way to get them around the kitchen, get some flour, make your own pasta," states Bennett.
