JOPLIN, MO.--- Clicking your seat belt is a simple thing to do, however many people fail to do it everyday. That's why the Missouri Highway Patrol held a "Get Your Clicks On Route 66" campaign today to enforce it. They say starting kids at a young age to buckle up is the key.

"Absolutely start em young. What we always talk about. You make it a habit for 30 days. You'll start with it," states Sgt. Mike Watson, Missouri Highway Patrol.

Students at Mark Twain Elementary School in Carthage say they always buckle and have been doing it since they were toddlers.

"When I was starting as a baby, my parents would always buckle me and they'll teach me how. Every time I get in the car, I'm in the habit of it," states Quinn Nelson, 9.

They say if their family forgets, they remind them.

"One time my grandpa, he's old. He forgot. I'm like put on your seat belt," states Trace Stephenson, 10.

"That's good. I encourage that shaming the parents or grandparents if that what it takes to wear a seat belt, then we would be all for it," states Watson.

Ariela Sanchez reminded her uncle, but he didn't' listen and ended up in an accident.

"My uncle, I told him to put his seat belt on, but he didn't want to. So a semi hit him real hard and he went over and over," states Sanchez.

"Is he going to be ok," asks Brad Douglas.

"I'm not sure," states Sanchez.

Repetition is important.

"Put on your seat belt, put on your seat belt, put on your seat," states Sanchez.

The kids say teenagers are the worst offenders for not wearing seat belts.

"They forget because they are so excited. When they text you don't want to do that," states Nelson.

"They think that they're too cool for it. They think they're too cool for everything," states Stephenson.
