Cherokee County Attorney Race

CHEROKEE COUNTY, KS.--- Next Tuesday, Cherokee County voters will decide who will represents them in this court room. Both Republican Nathan Coleman and Democrat Melanie Bingham are practicing attorneys in Cherokee County.
"I was first over in Baxter for a little while, and now I've been here in my Galena office for a little over a year," states Nathan Coleman.
"Since January of 2011, I've been working in prosecution in some capacity," states Melanie Bingham.
If elected, Coleman says he wants to make sure the office has a good relationship with law enforcement.
"We have to aggressively prosecute crime, and file the cases to support law enforcement, to support the work that they are out there in the field doing," states Coleman.
Bingham says she hopes to send a strong message to criminals about what they can expect if they break the law in her jurisdiction.
"We want this place to be a safe place, we want it to be like it was when we were kids, when we could ride our bikes and not have to worry constantly, when we didn't have to lock our doors, and that's what I plan to do," states Bingham.
Both candidates say along with prosecuting offenders, they want to take steps to prevent crimes.
"I've been working with local law enforcement to get rid of the meth problem, to get rid of every problem that we have, and doing that through both education and through prosecution," states Bingham.
"To get out into the school districts, to be known to the youth, and to explain the laws of our state and what the consequences are of breaking those laws," states Coleman.
