Joplin High School Construction Site Uncovers Mine Shafts

JOPLIN, MO.--- Workers discovered mine shafts this week as they were preparing the ground for the new school. Preliminary research had already identified one, which has since been capped. Now, 7 more have been uncovered. That led workers to rearrange the construction schedule, to allow work to continue on other areas of the site.
"It's not going to cause any problems from a structural standpoint. It's not going to cause any problems from a time frame standpoint. It's just going to cost a little extra money to cap each one of those. We estimate somewhere around $10,000 on the high end," states Dr. C.J. Huff, Joplin School Superintendent.
The current construction schedule calls for classes to start in the new high school in August 2014.
