PARSONS, KS.--- It's a situation that's causing a lot of concern.
"We've had quite a few counterfeit bills show up and then most recently in this last week we've had quite a surge of the number of bills that have been turning up in our community," states Scott Gofurth, Parsons Police Chief.
The funny money is showing up at McDonald's, Sonic, Pete's Convenience Store, and other shops. They aren't the only ones being targeted.
"We've had a couple of different individuals who have driven here from out of town to sell items and then they have actually been paid with counterfeit bills," states Gofurth.
Parsons Police officers have confiscated 30 counterfeit bills so far. Totaling $1,600 if they had real value.
"Normally, it's been 100's, 50's and 20's," states Gofurth.
Finding and stopping the culprit or culprits is a challenge.
"We really don't have any suspects, they're out following up leads as we speak right now and of course we're hoping to develop suspects," states Gofurth.
Officers urge people to be cautious and proactive to avoid being scammed.
"They can do so very cheaply by buying the markers or pens or simply by looking at the bill they will be able to tell," states Gofurth.
There are obvious signs letting you know the bills are fake, they don't have a watermark or security strip, and the borders of the bills are uneven. If you do suspect a bill you receive is fake, you are asked to contact Parsons Police Department immediately. People cannot be too careful right now.
