JOPLIN, MO.--- A ground breaking day for what used to be the Meadows Nursing Home of Joplin which was destroyed in last year's tornado. The facility is coming back under a new name and at a new site.
"It will be about a 8.5 million dollar project upon completion. So it's a major commitment for healthcare in this area," states Bill Mitchell, LTC Consulting Vice President of Operations.
The new long term care facility will be known as the communities at Wildwood Ranch. It's part of the 2,000 acre master planned development.
"This facility will be an asset to our project and the overall plan," states Mitchell.
Wildwood Ranch representatives say adding the nursing home to their development is an honor.
"We're just happy to be part of the rebuilding process with Joplin. We're excited to see what the future's going to bring," states Teresa Gilliam, Wildwood Ranch Manager of Operations.
Developers of the nursing home facility agree the land was the perfect spot to nearly double the size of their previous location.
"This building will be a 60,000 square foot, 120 bed facility. It will be broken into 4 communities," states Mitchell.
Those 4 separate operations within one building will include areas for people suffering from Alzheimer's as well as long term care residents. The new facility will be built with some major upgrades.
"We're putting in a new therapeutic pool, that's something that's a new standard of care. We're also going to have a new gymnasium for therapy, that'll be 2,000 square feet. We'll have kitchens that they can learn how to recook, they can learn how to restock, they can learn how to order," states Mitchell.
All of these amenities planned while keeping the needs of future residents in mind.
"We're designing this to be for the greater purpose to be 'treatment and home.' Treatment and home is the goal," states Mitchell.
The project also has a 420 day timeline and should be complete some time in early 2014. Bill Mitchell with LTC consulting says this is the first of 2 nursing homes in the works. The other is Greenbriar. He is hoping to see a ground breaking event for that facility somewhere in Joplin in about 90 days.
