JOPLIN, MO.---- Today marked Winter Weather Awareness Day in Missouri. The National Weather Service, the Missouri Department of Health, Senior Services, and the State Emergency Management Agency combined to recognize the day. Local emergency managers say it's important to start making plans for the worst to happen now instead of waiting until the first snowflakes start to fall.

"I think in having a plan you need to know if you're going to evacuate, where you're going to evacuate to, if you decide to stay in place, can you supply yourself," states Keith Stammer, Joplin Emergency Management Director.

Your winter weather kit should include warm clothes and blankets, along with enough food and water for 3 days. Your vehicle kit should include clothes, water, food, and jumper cables.
