GROVE, OK.---- Harold Cavanaugh is a retired airman with a passion to help disabled veterans.
"It comes from the heart. You do it because you love it. It's the right thing to do," states Cavanaugh.
He's been a volunteer service officer at the Grove Disabled American Veterans Organization for 12 years.
"We help veterans fill out claims for disability. And, we accept donations to cover our costs for doing that," states Cavanaugh.
They're able to help hundreds of vets in Northeast Oklahoma solely through monetary help from the community and they never solicit donations over the phone.
"No no no no no we do not. If people want to donate money to us they can send a check, send it to our post office box," states Cavanaugh.
So Cavanaugh was left speechless when he got a call from a veteran saying someone claiming to be with the DAV called him and asked for a donation.
"It's not right for someone to call and say they're from a military organization," states Cavanaugh.
The scam targets the older generation.
"A lot of times the senior citizens will get picked on and they're so vulnerable some of them that they'll write out a check. It's not right," states Cavanaugh.
Cavanaugh says to be extremely wary of calls you get for donations and urges you to try and figure out who might be on the other side of the line, and then call the police.
"Try and get as much details so it can be verified," states Cavanaugh.
