BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, MO - Jasper County deputies received a call around 11:30 this morning from a Springfield hospital reporting two kids suffering gun shot wounds. Authorities say a two year old girl and four year old boy were shot at a property off of County Lane 173 in Brooklyn Heights.

After investigating, deputies say the children were caught in the middle of shots being fired inside a home. Authorities say the children's parents were fighting when the wife's father got involved with a firearm. Shots were fired, but deputies aren't saying who pulled the trigger.

"It appears right now it started out as a domestic and evolved into possibly other charges being filed now," says capt. Derek Walrod with the Jasper County Sheriffs Office. "We don't know that much about it right now because we're still investigating and don't want to give any false information," Walrod adds.

Neighbor Doug Jackson says he's are not at all surprised by the incident.

"The two argued constantly," Jackson says. "Everyday it seemed like there was something. He would come out and open the door and you could probably be a half mile down the road and you could hear it," he adds.

The husband and his wife's father were both arrested. They are being held at the Jasper County jail and face charges of domestic assault.

Both children were taken to a Springfield hospital via Med Flight. At last check their injuries are being described as non-life threatening. No names are being released at this time.
