JOPLIN, MO-- The Christmas shopping frenzy will soon start with Black Friday and Cyber Monday - but there's another retail day to add to the list. November 24th is Small Business Saturday. The two year old shopping holiday started with American Express. It's an effort to encourage consumers to support local businesses during the jam packed weekend after Thanksgiving. Joplin workers say they hope residents will spend local dollars whether it's the first load of Christmas present or a mealtime break from the festivities.
Deb Allison with retail store Upstairs Boutique said, "I hope that on Saturday that they really make a cognizant effort to not spend money at big box stores and to focus on local. I know when I go to a restaurant Saturday, it's only going to be a local restaurant."
The National Retail Federation estimates 147 million people have plans to shop this weekend.
