JOPLIN, MO.--- This morning, Joplin city workers began the month long process of collecting leaves from curbs in residential neighborhoods. This year, they'll begin their annual pick up in Silver Creek. Although the village doesn't officially merge with Joplin until after the first of the year, Mary Ann Phillips with the Recycling Center say preventing build up in gutters will cut down on work in the long run.
"Well, Silver Creek has a lot of trees down there and because they don't have typical curb and gutter on their streets, we saw a potential problem there, more of a problem than in College Heights so we started with Silver Creek," states Mary Ann Phillips, Joplin Recycling Center.
The leaves will be taken to an area near the Turkey Creek Waste-Water Treatment Plant where they will be turned into free compost available to anyone in the community.
