CARTHAGE, MO.--- Bob Harrington is trying to bring a piece of local civil war history back to life.
"It was kind of a flash point that started a lot of the activities in this part of the state," states Bob Harrington, Memorial Park Planner.
Nearly 150 years ago, this was the site of the battle at Rader's Farm, a deadly attack that left 18 union soldiers dead, leading to a retaliation and the family home being burnt to the ground.
"It's a very important part of history of this area," states Harrington.
County commissioners and local historians want this land located off of Fountain and Peace Church Road to be preserved.
"We felt like it was a historical area and that maybe we should establish a county park," states Jim Honey, Commissioner.
Today, county commissioners met with members who want to turn the county land into the Rader's Farm Memorial Park. They proposed a set of plans and have the go ahead for them.
"There's a lot of history in Carthage and of course a lot of battles were here, but there's not much in the western county depicting the Civil War," states Honey.
Harrington is taking the lead on the construction to recreate the Rader Farm.
"We're going to put new siding on the barn so it looks older instead of modern," states Harrington.
A replica of the Rader family home will be built.
"We hope to build a two story pine house as well as a small log cabin," states Harrington.
The overall goal is to create a "living history" and remind people of the local history.
"We'd like to set up a visitor's center. We can put a large map of this part of the county and show all of the different battle sites that were in this part of the area," states Harrington.
Bob Harrington says they will be setting up a fundraiser through the Community Foundation of the Ozarks to get enough funds for the project. It is estimated to cost $85,000.
