PITTSBURG, KS.---"We value technology in education, we know it plays a vital role in what our kids are doing and learning," states Mike Hogard, PHS Teacher.
Even though cell phones aren't allowed during class time, Pittsburg High School students can use them for certain lessons.
"For instance, if we use vocabulary they can use Dictionary.com," states Hogard.
However, English teacher Mike Hogard says students could end up texting or on Facebook.
"That's just vigilance in the part of the teacher," says Hogard.
Recently, school officials have come across students sending inappropriate content to each other through phones or iPads.
"We've had a few and I believe we're not alone on that," states Hogard.
To prevent that from happening, the Pittsburg School District created a new policy outlining inappropriate behavior and consequence.
"So that our administrations would have a clear cut policy on what to do," states Hogard.
Violations of the policy include cheating, cyber bullying, and sexting via phones or computers.
"We're not out to get the students. Obviously our number one job is to educate the students in a safe manner," says Hogard.
The consequences could be as severe as suspension or expulsion but administrators have the final call on the punishment.
"Based on the severity and the content, who saw it, thing like that, what the consequences could be," states Hogard.
School officials say it's about providing a secure learning environment for students.
"It can really disrupt the school when there is inappropriate material floating around electronically," states Hogard.
